Drumset Method Book for Beginner Drummers

Matt Jones Drum Method Book The Musical Drummer.png

Book Synopsis

"The Musical Drummer" is not just another drum method book full of random beats and endless exercises. It’s a practical, musician-first guide designed to help drummers think beyond beats alone and become confident, musical players who can perform both technically and methodically.

This book teaches grooves, dynamics, form, reading charts, understanding song structure, and how different styles feel — all in a way that connects directly to real music. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a developing drummer, The Musical Drummer focuses on what truly matters: playing with intention, awareness, and confidence in a band setting.

It’s not about learning a thousand beats.
It’s about learning how to use them.

This is still being completed. If you'd like to be notified when it is print ready and deliverable, send me a message and I will add you to the list!

What is The Musical Drummer about?

This book teaches drumming from a musical perspective. Yes, you’ll learn grooves, fills, technique and reading — but more importantly, you’ll learn how to listen, understand song structure, control dynamics, and play in a way that serves the music. It’s about becoming a musician first and a drummer second.

Why did you decide to write this book?

After teaching drums for over 20 years, I noticed a pattern: many students can play beats, but struggle to play music. They don’t always understand form, dynamics, charts, or how to lock in with others. I wrote The Musical Drummer to bridge that gap — to create a clear, modern roadmap that helps drummers become well-rounded, confident players who can step into real musical situations.

How is this book different from other drum method books?

Most drum books focus heavily on technical exercises or endless grooves. This book connects everything directly to real music. It teaches how beats function inside songs, how to read repeats and charts, how to navigate different genres, and how to think like a band member — not just a beat machine. It’s structured, practical, and designed for real-world playing.
